Forest Life
Chapter 1
Rem ran through the forest as fast as he could, hoping to escape the terrifying sight he'd just seen."WATCH OUT!!!" He yowled as he crashed into a dog carrying firewood into his cave. "Sorrysorrysorrysorrysorrysorrysorrysorrysorrysorry!!!!" Rem felt he couldn't apologize enough.
""ts Okay," The dog gruffly accepted his apology and began collecting the firewood that was now scattered across the cave entrance.
"Here," Rem stuck his paw out to gather the remainder of the wood, "I'll get that." As he collected the wood, Rem recalled what he'd seen to the dog, whose name, as he'd learned, was Karan. When he'd finished, Karan seemed skeptical.
"So, what you mean to tell me," he said, thinking that the brown tabby had gotten his facts mixed up, "is that you saw wolf cubs? Huntin'?"
"Yes, that's exactly right." He confirmed with a nod.
"Which means..." Karan finished what Rem had been thinking, "That Tarashi and her pack will be comin' within a week's time... And that ain't good..." Karan paced the cave entrance where the firewood had been thirty seconds earlier. "We oughta go an' warn the o'ers..."
"Yes, perhaps..." Rem turned to leave, but noticed something glinting on the ground. "Hunh? What's this?" Karan inspected it closely.
"Looks like a 'uman treasure... Y'know, what they use to buy 'ouses and the like..." He returned it to Rem, and walked into his cave. Rem, not wanting his new treasure to be stolen, quietly stalked back to his own den.
Rem awoke, much to his pleasure, to see that the first frost had occurred. He went down to the river to get his morning breakfast, but saw that it was too crowded for his morning fish. What's going on...? He wondered. He walked over to where the animals stood. A horrible sight awaited them there...
Chapter 2: Muff's Departure
Muff quietly slipped through the doggy-door of the home she'd so loved and enjoyed. She'd hoped she could stay longer, but it no longer appeared that she'd be able to. She looked back at her home once more before the small door was still. Muff sighed and trotted into the wood in her human's backyard. She looked around a bit, before approaching a rotting tree stump. She barked twice, and a small red squirrel answered her.
"I'm looking for Flit." She murmured.
"Very well," The squirrel named Flick beckoned her in. "right this way." He led Muff through a small corridor that she had to crawl in to get through.
"My apologies; We're used to smaller guests..." Flick said, leading the way with a torch, "Flip had meant to enlgarge it, but she'd never gotten to it..." Muff kept crawling, but she cried out in pain as her paw landed on something sharp. Flick turned around.
"Oh, what's the matter?" He looked down at her paw, "Oh, Flash really must pick those tacks up... He collects human treasures, you see..." He turned around again and began walking. Muff, limping slightly, followed. Every few yards, there stood a statue of a squirrel, holding a lantern. After about five minutes, they approached a larger doorway, the tunnel got larger, and Muff was able to stand up. She could hear voices from the other side:
"Are you absolutely sure?" Said a soft, masculine voice Muff recognized to be Flit's, "They're coming next week?"
"Yes," replied a feminine voice; Muff didn't recognize this one, "It has been confirmed by Karan himself..."
"He saw them himself?"
Before the the other squirrel could respond, a deeper voice cut in: "No, that awkward runaway, Rem, saw them, he says."
"Was he sure they were wolf cubs? They could very well have been fox kits. Nyara has been known to produce black kits..." Flit, again.
"Not a chance. I saw Nyara's litter; They were all orange this time." The deeper voice informed her.
"This isn't good..." Flit's voice carried a worried tone that frightened Muff; She hadn't known Flit too well, but from what she knew, he had the answers to everything... "This would mean that we need to prepare for Tarashi. This means danger to all the village... We ought to evacuate all the young ones..."
"Yes..." The female agreed, "That would do..."
"Shall we gather the Fighters? And the Guardians? The Elders ought to be of some help."
"Yes, yes, that will do." Flit agreed.
"Right, then, it's agreed!" The deep voice seemed excited, "I could use some action!" Finally seeing the sense to knock, Flick called in, "Hello! I come with a guest!"
"They be Human-Bred, or Wild?" Flit called back.
"She's Human-Bred, brother!" Muff heard Flit sigh.
"'S it the Canine?"
"Yes, brother!"
"Okay," Muff heard small footsteps in the direction of the door, "Unlocking the door!" Muff and Flick stepped back, and the door opened to reveal three other red squirrels, each with an apprehensive expression on their faces.
"Ah, welcome!" The female squirrel said cheerily, "Do come in!"
And... That's as far as I was able to get. Yeah, it's kinda weird, but... Anyway, did you like it? Should I continue? Post comments here, please. ^^
